Guam has been an unincorporated Territory of the United States of America since it was gained as a result of the 1898 Spanish-American War. Being its western most territory, Guam is known as "Where America’s Day Begins". Although a U.S. Territory, Guam is recognized as an independent sporting nation by the IOC and competes independently in the Olympic Games.

A tropical island with splendid Tumon Bay as its jewel, Guam is a popular tourist destination in the northern Pacific with an average temperature of 80 degrees (30 Celsius).

Guam is located 3 flying hours from Tokyo, Japan, Manila, Philippines and Taipei, Taiwan. 4 flying hours from Cairns, Australia, Seoul, Korea, Bali, Indonesia and Hong Kong. 8 flying hours from Hawaii, U.S.A. and Auckland New Zealand. Situated just twelve degrees latitude north of the equator, the rugby season on Guam is September - April.

Continental Airlines flies directly to and from Guam via most major Japan cities, Bali, Hong Kong, Cairns (Australia), and Hawaii. Northwest Airlines services Guam from its hub in Tokyo. JAL and ANA also fly from all major cities in Japan. Korean Air and Asiana fly from Seoul. Phillipine Airlines and China Airlines (Taiwan) also fly several days per week from many Asian cities.
